Money Mindset

Scarcity vs. Abundance Mindset

What these popular mindset labels mean, where they can be useful, and where they can oversimplify real financial constraints.

Scarcity mindset

Scarcity thinking focuses attention on what is limited or at risk. Sometimes that focus is distorted; sometimes the scarcity is completely real.

Abundance mindset

Abundance thinking emphasizes possibility, resources and options. It can widen attention, but it should not become denial of constraints.

The useful middle

A grounded approach can acknowledge a hard constraint while still asking what choices remain available.

Avoid moralizing

People facing low income, high costs or debt do not simply need to “think abundant.” Material circumstances matter.
